Memorial Park

In the aftermath of September 11th, the Mayor of New York City asked 1100 Architect to design a temporary memorial for the family members and friends of victims. Undertaken pro bono, 1100 Architect converted an existing space near Ground Zero into a non-denominational sanctuary that offered family members a private place to grieve and remember their loved ones. A pair of remembrance walls defined and partially enclosed the space, and a translucent fabric canopy provided shelter while letting in light. The focal point of the sanctuary—a bluestone fountain set against a birch panel wall—masked outside noise and created a dignified and serene interior.
