The New York Public Library Francis Martin Library

For this branch of the New York Public Library, in the Bronx, we transformed what had been a dark, cramped, and outdated space into a naturally lit, open, and contemporary learning environment. Removing partitions that previously subdivided the floor, the new design enhances circulation and allows daylight deep into the space. The stacks are arrayed in a fanning radial pattern that creates clear sightlines across the floor, allowing two librarians positioned at information desks by the entrance to efficiently supervise the entire library. Group reading areas, independent study space, and media stations are located on the perimeters of the space, where they take advantage of the views and natural light.
