1100: Collaborates with NYC Parks to Pave the Way for Innovative Modular Construction in Public Spaces

1100 Architect has completed a pilot project for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, designing and delivering a comfort station using modular construction. The project marks the first time NYC Parks has built a project in this way. The Department commissioned 1100 Architect to design not only the pilot project but also the delivery system that would allow it to use modular construction for other future projects.

With the goal of reducing construction time and cost, NYC Parks determined to pioneer modular construction, manufacturing building components in an off-site location before assembling them on site. Because capital projects can result in temporary park closures, reducing construction time carries the added benefit of keeping public spaces open.

The culmination of 1100 Architect’s efforts materialized in the form of a pioneering pilot project at Luis Lopez Park in Staten Island. This endeavor, which focused on the design and implementation of a cutting-edge comfort station, received a 2021 Design Award from the NYC Public Design Commission (PDC). The PDC's acknowledgment underscores the transformative impact of our approach, affirming that "this comfort station prototype utilizes the efficiencies of off-site construction and the lower costs associated with modular production techniques to economically provide amenities in the City’s public spaces."

The steel-frame structure is enclosed with a facade of glazed blocks, giving it needed durability. The comfort station seamlessly integrates into its surroundings while offering a vibrant visual presence. The incorporation of a green roof underscores New York City’s and our dedication to environmentally conscious design practices.

Functionality was a paramount consideration throughout the design process. Equipped with two restrooms and a dedicated space for park maintenance, the station prioritizes accessibility, durability, and resilience against vandalism and adverse weather conditions.

The recent ribbon-cutting ceremony at Lopez Playground marked a significant milestone in 1100 Architect’s ongoing partnership with NYC Parks. As the newly unveiled public restroom building signifies, our collaborative efforts have not only introduced cutting-edge modular construction practices but have also set a new standard for cost-efficiency and sustainability in public infrastructure development.

Council Member Kamillah Hanks aptly noted, “Today’s ribbon-cutting ceremony is not just an unveiling of new restrooms, it’s a celebration of forward thinking and innovation. The modular design of this public restroom at Lopez Playground is a testament to our commitment to smart, sustainable solutions on Staten Island."
