Robin Hood Library Initiative

The Robin Hood Foundation’s library initiative is aimed at providing underserved New York City public schools with quality libraries, and 1100 Architect has partnered with the organization on the design of six such libraries. For the first of these, at Public School 16, in Staten Island, we created an adaptable space organized around a serpentine bookcase, which we called the “bookworm.” 1100 Architect was subsequently selected to design five additional libraries for the Robin Hood Foundation. The curvilinear “bookworm” concept designed for PS 16 was further refined and developed into a flexible, modular system that could adapt to the range of layouts and conditions at each of the five schools. In each instance, the bookcase acts as the visual focal point of the space and divides the library into distinct and versatile areas.
